Hertha BSC Triumphs Over Mainz 05, Jovetic Scores, Mainz Rejoins Inequality
Hertha BSC secured their place in the German Bundesliga after defeating Mainz 05 on Sunday with a goal from Brazilian midfielder Bruno Fernandes.
The match was played at the Olympiastadion in Berlin and saw Hertha take the lead through a header from Bruno Fernandes just before half-time. The result means that Hertha now have two points more than Mainz and will be playing in the top flight for the first time since 2014.
Jovetic scored his second goal of the season as he netted the equaliser for Mainz in the 88th minute to bring them back into the game. However, it was too little too late as Hertha held on for the win.
The victory also sees Mainz join the club's previous record of three consecutive seasons out of the Bundesliga, which was set between 2007 and 2010.
This result is not only a boost for Hertha but also a blow for Mainz who had been hoping to make up some ground in the table.
Despite the defeat, Mainz coach Christian Gross expressed his disappointment and said: "I am disappointed because we had the opportunity to come back but unfortunately we didn't."
However, there were positives for Mainz as they have now joined the league's bottom four teams, giving them hope of survival.
Overall, this was a tough game for both sides and one that will go down in history as the most important match of the season so far. It will be interesting to see how the rest of the Bundesliga plays out over the next few weeks.
